Mail delays in Georgia are causing issues with tax payments, prompting Senator Jon Ossoff to ask the IRS to waive penalties and speed up refunds due to ongoing USPS problems.
Mail Delays in Georgia Causing Tax Payment Issues
According to Rough Draft, Georgians are facing problems with their tax payments because of ongoing mail delays. Senator Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., has asked the IRS to help after hearing from people who are getting penalties and interest fees for late or missing tax payments, even though they mailed them on time. These problems are due to delays by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), which have caused some tax filings to be late or lost.
Ossoff raised these issues after Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said the USPS’s Atlanta mail center was delivering only 36% of mail on time. DeJoy blamed the delays on problems with a USPS restructuring plan aimed at making the postal service more efficient. Even though efforts have been made to fix these problems, such as bringing in extra workers and changing transportation schedules, delays are still happening.

Senator Ossoff Calls for IRS to Waive Penalties and Speed Up Refunds Due to USPS Mail Delays
To address these issues, Ossoff wants the IRS to cancel tax payments, penalties, and interest fees that resulted from USPS delays. He also wants the IRS to quickly adjust taxpayer accounts to stop more fees from piling up and to speed up the processing of tax refunds for people affected by these delays.
