IRS Direct File Program to Offer Free Tax Filing for North Carolinians in 2025
Successful Pilot Prompts Permanent Adoption of IRS Direct File, Saving Millions in Fees
According to The Charlotte Observer, in 2025 North Carolinians will have a new way to file their taxes for free thanks to a tool introduced by the IRS. Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Revenue Secretary Ronald Penny announced that the IRS Direct File program will be available to eligible residents. This program will allow people to file both their state and federal tax returns directly through the IRS without any fees. By using this tool taxpayers can save money and ensure they receive any tax credits they qualify for without additional costs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make tax filing more accessible and affordable for everyone.
The IRS Direct File program was tested in 2024 and showed good results. It saved users about $5.6 million in tax preparation fees and helped them get over $90 million in refunds. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said the tool was efficient with many people finishing their filings in just 30 minutes. Because the pilot was so successful the program will become a permanent option starting next year. This means more people will be able to file their taxes for free and enjoy the ease and speed of the new system.

Although the IRS Direct File tool will be available it is not required for taxpayers to use. About 1.25 million North Carolinians will be eligible for this tool which aims to reduce tax fraud and improve security within the tax system. Secretary Penny highlighted that the program will also help by cutting down on paper filings, which will reduce the workload for state employees and make the Department of Revenue more efficient. This streamlined process is expected to make tax filing easier and more secure for everyone involved.
