Police Detain Climber as Paris Intensifies Security for Closing Ceremony
According to ABC7 NEWS, French police were forced to evacuate the area around the Eiffel Tower on Sunday afternoon after a man was seen climbing the famous structure just hours before the Paris Olympics closing ceremony. The shirtless man began his climb at about 2:45 p.m. and was spotted scaling the 330-meter (1,083-foot) tower reaching a point above the Olympic rings on the second section of the monument. Authorities responded quickly to the situation leading to a major disruption for visitors and creating a tense atmosphere ahead of the evening’s events.
The police action resulted in the immediate evacuation of the tower’s surrounding area. Visitors were escorted away and some who were briefly stuck on the second floor were allowed to leave about 30 minutes later. The Paris police confirmed that the climber was detained once officers arrived on the scene. This event happened as the city was ramping up security for the closing ceremony of the Olympics scheduled to take place at Stade de France later that night.

Paris Boosts Security with 30,000 Officers for Olympic Closing Ceremony
As the Olympics approached their conclusion Paris saw a major increase in security. Over 30,000 police officers were deployed throughout the city with approximately 3,000 assigned to secure the Stade de France for the closing ceremony. France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that an additional 20,000 security personnel were mobilized in Paris and the nearby Saint-Denis area. This heightened security effort highlighted the city’s determination to maintain safety and order as the Games came to an end.
