Connecticut to Offer Free IRS Direct File Tax System in 2025
According to CBS News, Connecticut will soon offer a free electronic tax-filing system starting in the 2025 tax season. This new option, IRS Direct File, will help residents file their taxes without paying for expensive tax software. Governor Ned Lamont and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the expansion on Friday, aiming to make tax filing easier and more affordable.
IRS Direct File was tested in 12 states for the 2024 tax season and was successful. Around 140,000 people used it to get over $90 million in refunds and save $5.6 million on filing costs. With this positive outcome, the program is expanding to include Connecticut, providing more people with a cost-free way to file their taxes.
