Undocumented Immigrants Contributed $97 Billion in Taxes in 2022, With Potential for Even Higher Payments If Given Work Permits
According to Maryland Matters, a new study shows that undocumented immigrants paid nearly $97 billion in taxes in 2022, including federal, state, and local taxes. This is a huge amount of money, especially when you consider that these immigrants often can’t use the services their taxes help fund. In Maryland, they paid about $779.3 million in taxes. This shows how much they contribute to public funds, even though they don’t get many benefits.
The study also found that if undocumented immigrants were able to get work permits, they’d pay around $40.2 billion more in taxes each year. This extra tax revenue would come from better job opportunities and easier tax compliance. In Maryland alone, this could add an extra $262 million to state funds. The research highlights that, in some states, undocumented immigrants actually pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes compared to wealthy individuals.
