Austin’s TreeFolks Stung by $100,000 Burglary: Nonprofit Devastated by Theft of Equipment and Resources!

TreeFolks Reels from Major Burglary, Loses $100,000 in Equipment and Vehicles

Community Support Brightens TreeFolks’ Recovery Amidst Operational and Financial Challenges

According to FOX7 Austin, TreeFolks a nonprofit dedicated to planting and caring for trees in Austin, Texas is grappling with the aftermath of a major burglary that occurred on July 27. Thieves broke through the front gate of their office stealing a truck, several vehicles, and crucial equipment worth around $100,000. The stolen items include a lawn mower weed trimmer, chainsaw, and heavy-duty carts all vital for the organization’s upcoming planting season. This theft is particularly devastating as it follows another recent incident where a different truck was stolen and later found abandoned and damaged. The loss of these resources is a severe blow to their operations impacting their ability to continue their important environmental work.

Executive Director Andrew Smiley has voiced his deep frustration and disappointment following the theft. He highlighted that the burglary not only caused significant financial damage but also forced the staff to spend valuable time dealing with repairs, interacting with law enforcement and handling insurance claims. This diversion from their core mission of environmental stewardship has been particularly disheartening. Despite these challenges Smiley is encouraged by the strong support from the community which has helped to lift their spirits during this difficult time. The support has been a bright spot amidst the struggle to recover from the financial and operational setbacks caused by the theft.
