Tennessee will not have a grocery tax-free holiday in 2024 due to budget priorities focused on business tax breaks and unsuccessful legislative efforts to reinstate or abolish the tax.
Tennessee Cancels 2024 Grocery Tax-Free Holiday Amid Focus on Business Tax Breaks
According to The Tennessean, Tennessee won’t have a grocery tax-free holiday in 2024, even though it was successful last year. The event, which lasted from August to October 2023, saved residents up to $288 million by removing the state’s 4% grocery tax on essential food. This year, there’s no budget for such a tax break.
Governor Bill Lee is focusing on giving over $1.6 billion in tax breaks to businesses, so there’s no money left for a grocery tax break for consumers. Attempts by lawmakers to bring back the grocery tax holiday or get rid of the grocery tax entirely have not worked out. Their proposals were either removed or voted down.

Efforts from Rep. Aftyn Behn and Sen. Charlane Oliver to create a temporary grocery tax holiday or abolish the tax did not succeed. The state’s budget and legislative issues have made it clear that there will be no grocery tax break in 2024.
