Hillsborough County to Start Refund Process for Invalid Sales Tax – How to Apply and What to Expect
According to the report of 10 Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County, Florida, is getting ready to send out instructions for people to claim refunds from the now-voided transportation sales tax. This comes after a court ruling and the signing of the state budget by Governor Ron DeSantis. The tax, which was ruled unconstitutional by the Florida Supreme Court in 2021, collected over $500 million. The money will be used for road improvements, a county tax break, and refunds to people who apply.
To get a refund, residents will follow a process similar to claiming a class action settlement. A $170 million fund will be used to pay back people who have valid claims. Those with proper documents can get a full refund, while those without receipts can claim up to $100 if they can prove they lived in Hillsborough County during the tax period from 2019 to 2021.

Refund Claims for Hillsborough County’s Invalid Sales Tax – Key Dates and How to Apply
Residents will receive notices in the mail by the end of August. There will also be email notifications and a website where people can submit their claims. Those who have already received a refund or have a pending request with the Florida Department of Revenue are not eligible for this program.
