Four teenagers have been charged and jailed for the fatal shooting of former University of Southern Mississippi football player M.J. Daniels during a failed carjacking.
Teenagers Charged in Murder of University of Southern Mississippi Football Player
Four teenagers are in Forrest County Jail for the death of former University of Southern Mississippi football player M.J. Daniels. Court hearings have revealed more about the incident. Orlando May, 18, and Samir Green, 16 had their preliminary hearings this month. It was shown that Daniels was found in his car at Ivy Row apartments on June 11 after being shot. Police connected May, Green, and two other teens Allen Gardner, 17, and Nytavion Shaw, 16, to the crime.
The Forrest County Branch NAACP spoke about the serious problem of teens committing severe crimes. Dr. Mary Hossley, the NAACP’s second vice president said these crimes ruin lives, affecting both the victims and the offenders. Ja’Landra Harris, an NAACP youth advisor, said the community must work together to help young people avoid violence. They suggested starting efforts at home and in schools to address mental health and teach the consequences of violence, according to the report of WDAM.

Carjacking Gone Wrong Claims Life of M.J. Daniels
In court, it was explained how the teens’ series of crimes led to M.J. Daniels’ death. Investigator Chadra Daniels said the teens had stolen cars and tried to carjack others. They saw Daniels’ car running and decided to steal it. During the attempt, shots were fired and a 9mm gunshot killed Daniels. The teens then fled and left the stolen car. The case continues with more hearings for Gardner and Shaw in August.
