Cook County homeowners who overpaid their property taxes last year will receive automatic refunds totaling $30.5 million, with most payments deposited directly into bank accounts or mailed as checks.
Cook County Homeowners to Receive $30.5 Million in Automatic Tax Refunds This Week
According to the report of NBC Chicago, thousands of Cook County homeowners will receive automatic refunds totaling $30.5 million this week because they overpaid their property taxes last year. Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced that more than 9,000 property owners will get these refunds without needing to fill out any extra forms. About half of the refunds will be directly deposited into bank accounts over the next three months.
Homeowners who paid online will receive $13.1 million directly in their bank accounts, while those who used banks or mortgage accounts will get $8 million in checks. Around 2,900 homeowners who paid by cash or check will either get an electronic refund or a refund application.

How to Check Your Eligibility for Cook County’s Automatic Property Tax Refunds Online
To check if you’re getting a refund, go to the Cook County Treasurer’s website. Click on “Your Property Tax Overview” and enter your home address or 14-digit Property Index Number to see if you qualify. Most refunds are going to homeowners who may have qualified for tax exemptions, which lowered their total tax bill.
