45% of Eligible Washington Residents Claim Working Families Tax Credit – Challenges Remain!

In Washington, while less than half of eligible residents claimed the new Working Families Tax Credit last year, the program is praised for its impact, and efforts are underway to simplify the application process and increase participation to at least 50% next year.

Washington’s Working Families Tax Credit – Successes, Challenges, and Calls for Streamlined Processes

According to the report of Washington State Standard, in Washington, less than half of eligible residents took advantage of the new Working Families Tax Credit last year, though the state met its goal by reaching 45% of those eligible. The credit, which provides an annual refund between $50 and $1,255 based on income and number of children, has been praised for its impact amid economic hardships. With 86% of applicants approved and a significant portion of refunds already issued, the program is seen as a positive step in addressing the state’s inequitable tax system.

Despite these successes, the program faced challenges in its first year, including complex application processes and a lack of awareness among eligible families. Washington’s lack of an income tax adds another layer of difficulty in verifying eligibility. Advocates are pushing for streamlined processes and improved access, such as through House Bill 1895, which aims to simplify verification and integration with other programs.
