According to the report of North Jersey, New Jersey will join the IRS’ Direct File program starting in 2025, making it easier for people to file their taxes. Governor Phil Murphy and U.S. Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo announced that over 1 million New Jersey residents can use this free service to file both federal and state taxes online. The program will help with simple tax forms and make sure users get all the credits and refunds they are entitled to.
The Direct File program was tested in 12 states during the 2024 tax season and helped over 140,000 people. It saved them around $5.6 billion in filing costs and helped them claim more than $90 million in refunds. The IRS received positive feedback, so they decided to expand the program to all states and more complex tax situations.
