Two Men Recognized as Victims of Mass Shooting at Garfield Park Drive-by
Two men charged in a mass shooting at Garfield Park drive-by last month, killing the mother of a prized Ohio State football recruit and wounding four others, were refused bail Friday. Chicago police reported Friday that Manuel Bahamon, 22, and Ismael Lozada, 23, face one first-degree murder and four attempted murder charges.
A police report states that Ashley Griggs and others gathered in the 4000 block of West Washington Boulevard following a Marshall High School reunion on July 16. Prosecutors said an uncharged co-offender drove Bahamon, Lozada, and three other witnesses past the meeting at 2 a.m. Witnesses said they drove by the group earlier at night and saw them shooting dice outside. Prosecutors alleged that Bahamon and Lozada fired from the car’s passenger window onto the throng. Police said Griggs, 40, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Medical Center after being hit 10 times. Three guys and a lady were hurt.

Suspects of Mass Shooting at Garfield Park Drive-by Detained Without Bail
Griggs’s son Carnell Tate, an Ohio State University freshman, was a top Marist High School football recruit. Tate enrolled in January after signing a letter of intent with Ohio State in December. “The wait is finally over,” Griggs tweeted earlier this year, revealing her son’s No. 17 Ohio State jersey. The prosecution asserted. The scene discovered 40-caliber shell casings. Prosecutors say Bahamon inadvertently shot Lozada in the arm and took him to Humboldt Park Health Center.
Prosecutors said Bahamon texted one witness about the shooting and press coverage in the days afterward. He also texted about his “error of shooting his co-offender,” they said. Lozada is on probation for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, while Bahamon is charged with illegal use. The men were detained without bail. Their next court date was Sept. 13.
