The city of Salt Lake City in Utah, St. Louis Park in Minnesota, and Portland in Oregon are offering a rebate of up to $1300 to residents who purchase an e-bike as part of an initiative to promote cleaner transportation and reduce carbon emissions. The rebate is designed to encourage residents to switch from traditional gas-powered vehicles to eco-friendly e-bikes which can reduce congestion, pollution, and traffic accidents.
E-Bike Rebate Program Launched in Salt Lake City
To be eligible for the rebate residents must file their taxes by December 31, 2022 and meet certain income requirements. For example, married couples earning up to $150,000 can apply jointly, while individuals earning up to $75,000 can apply individually. In Portland, a separate e-bike scheme will be launched in the summer of 2025 exclusively for low- and medium-income earners with a voucher system that can be redeemed at authorized bike shops.
The cost of e-bikes can range from a couple of thousand dollars to $5000 for high-end models. Additionally, an extra $200 is available for essential accessories such as helmets and lights. In Salt Lake City, the rebate can be earned from select bike shops, including Bingham Cyclery, Contender, Magnum, Rad Power Bikes, and Trek. The application process is on a lottery basis and residents must apply through the city’s website, according to the report of Marca.
