The Shooting Happened at Laramie Avenue

On May 16, there was allegedly a gunshot heard across the Chicago expressway in the westbound lane of Interstate 290 close to Laramie Avenue. There was a call for the Illinois State Police to respond. Upon arriving, police officers found that a 27-year-old man had been slain by gunshots coming from another car.

Following a thorough investigation, Curtis Sheppard was detained on June 14 and eventually released without posting a bond. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is where Sheppard originally hails from. During the 1930s and 1940s, Sheppard was a popular warrior. He used to go by the name “The Hatchetman.”

On September 24, 1938, at Madison Square Garden, Sheppard knocked out Larry White to start his professional boxing career. On November 1 of that year, he suffered his first defeat by the decision to Danny Peal. Sheppard would go on to win four straight matches, including one against Herbie Katz. Katz won the rematch by decision, ending Sheppard’s winning streak at four.

According to authorities, Sheppard is presently being held at the Cook County Correctional Center.
