Marvin M. Mundy, who was convicted of murder, currently serves 36 years in prison for his role in the 1988 murder of a Henrico County hotel night manager and a guest, is hoping he will be next to receive a parole.

In the recent published report by Richmond Free Press, the 60-year-old Richmond native who was convicted of murder said “I believe I’ve served long enough,”. He is one of a dwindling number of inmates who remain eligible for release because their convictions occurred before 1994, when Gov. George Allen obtained General Assembly approval to abolish parole. Mundy, who was convicted of murder, is one of more than 3,000 people incarcerated in a state with a tough policy of rarely granting release, even to those who no longer pose a threat to others.

Mundy, who was convicted of murder, believes he has a strong case for release and has written it with the assistance of the Virginia Capital Case Clearinghouse (VCCC) at Washington & Lee University Law School. According to the VCCC report, Mr. Mundy should be released for a variety of reasons. Among these is the critical role he played in saving the lives of two Department of Corrections personnel, one of whom was a former warden at the Buckingham Correctional Center and the other a guard at the Greensville Correctional Center.

Mr. Mundy also expressed tremendous sorrow for his actions in a personal letter to the board, stating that he left behind the immature person he was when he arrived.

As per to the VCCC report, Mr. Mundy who was convicted of murder is also credited with organizing self-help counseling programs to help fellow convicts accept responsibility for their conduct that landed them in jail, prepare for release, and deal with parole rejection.

According to Leagle, Marvin Maurice Mundy was found guilty of capital murder, murder, robbery, and three counts of felony use of a firearm. On appeal, Mundy claims that the trial court erred in refusing to suppress his second and third police statements, that the evidence was insufficient to convict him of capital murder, and that the trial court erred in refusing to grant his motion for a new trial based on newly discovered evidence.

The Parole Board has received emails and letters expressing support for the release of Mundy, who was convicted of murder, ffrom the United States Congresswoman Jennifer L. McClellan and 14 Department of Corrections employees, including T. Jarrell, the assistant warden at Greensville, whose mail to the Parole Board described Mr. Mundy as a “model offender and a man of excellent character.”

Furthermore, the VCCC report shows that Mr. Mundy, who was convicted of murder was wrongfully convicted to two life terms plus 36 years for being the mastermind of the failed heist in which two people were slain.
