According to The U.S. Sun, residents affected by the devastating fire at Lubrizol’s Chemtool plant in Rockton, Illinois which erupted in June 2021 and burned for nine days are set to receive compensation through a $94.5 million class action settlement. The incident triggered by an explosion resulted in the release of approximately 15.4 million pounds of chemicals into the environment. This led to widespread evacuations and raised significant environmental concerns in the surrounding area. Despite the settlement not admitting fault it aims to provide restitution for homeowners and tenants who suffered property damage, depreciation in property values and other financial hardships within a three-mile radius of the plant during the fire.
To qualify for compensation under the settlement terms eligible individuals must prove their residency or property ownership within the affected area at the time of the incident. Acceptable forms of documentation include utility bills, ID cards, mortgage statements or any other official paperwork verifying residence.
