According to Chinese analysts, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s visit to China will set the scene for top-level leadership discussions and act as a “reality check” on American industry in China’s faltering economy.
US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s trip, from Sunday to Wednesday, would make her the latest US official to visit China since June, indicating that delayed high-level visits between the world’s largest economies are restarting amid rising geopolitical tensions.
In the recent published report by South China Morning Post, experts consider the visit US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo as another step toward a meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Joe Biden in San Francisco in November on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders’ Meeting. According to the Commerce Department, Raimondo will meet with senior officials and business leaders in the United States.
Jake Sullivan, the National Security Advisor said “we are not sending cabinet officials to China to change China, nor do we expect these conversations to change the United States. Rather, we each have the opportunity — through this high level engagement — to ensure that there is a basic, stable foundation in the relationship, even as we compete intensively in a number of domains”.
Biden’s economic policy has aimed to increase onshore production and strengthen supply chains. Earlier this month, the administration issued an executive order aimed at regulating some outbound Chinese technology investments. Senior administration officials presented it as a national security rather than an economic decision. It comprises semiconductors, quantum information technology, and some artificial intelligence systems that the United States views as “critical to military modernization.”
