Genetic Genealogy Leads to Arrest in 23-Year-Old Homicide Case, Bringing Long-Awaited Justice
According to True Crime Daily, in a significant breakthrough for a 23-year-old cold case Eugene Gligor has been arrested for the 2001 murder of Leslie Preer in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The case had long baffled investigators after police discovered Preer’s body on May 2, 2001 in her home following concerns when she did not show up for work. Officers found signs of foul play, and her death was immediately ruled a homicide. At the time DNA evidence was collected from the crime scene but traditional forensic methods were unable to pinpoint a suspect. It wasn’t until over two decades later with the advent of genetic genealogy that authorities revisited the case. In September 2022 blood evidence from the original crime scene was submitted to Othram Inc., a company specializing in advanced DNA analysis. This led to the creation of a detailed DNA profile that provided crucial investigative leads ultimately pointing to Gligor as a suspect.
In June 2024 investigators used a new DNA profile to match Eugene Gligor to the DNA evidence from the 2001 murder of Leslie Preer. This crucial match led to his arrest by the U.S. Marshals Task Force in Washington, D.C., on June 18. Gligor now faces first-degree murder charges and will be extradited to Maryland for trial. The use of genetic genealogy marks a significant advancement in solving old cases showing how modern technology can bring justice to victims and their families even after many years.
