According to the article of Fox 2 Now, St. Louis residents who worked from home during the pandemic and paid the city’s 1% earnings tax while living outside its limits will get refunds totaling $26 million. This comes after a lawsuit was settled, with the Missouri Court of Appeals ruling that remote work done outside the city isn’t subject to the city’s earnings tax.

About 2,100 people who filed appeals for refunds for the years 2020 through 2022 are affected by this settlement. Starting July 1, 2024, eligible taxpayers can apply for refunds through a simple process provided by the Collector of Revenue’s office. Refund requests must be submitted between July 1 and October 31, 2024, and payments should be completed by the end of the year.

Furthermore, Gregory F.X. Daly, the Collector of Revenue, stated that the city will follow the court’s decision and make sure the refund process is clear and easy. This settlement resolves the tax dispute and provides financial relief to taxpayers, addressing the issues from remote work during the pandemic.
