According to a published article in the Washington Examiner, a big Farm Bill supported by Republicans in the U.S. House is causing disagreements because it cuts $30 billion from the food stamps program, SNAP. This program which helps people buy food has seen costs go up a lot in recent years nearly doubling from 2019 to 2023. The bill called the Farm, Food, And National Security Act of 2024 is supposed to decide on food policies in the U.S.

Democrats and Republicans Clash Over $30 Billion Cut to SNAP in Proposed Farm Bill

Even though the bill passed in the House Agriculture Committee with more Republican than Democratic votes, it might face problems in the Senate where Democrats have more control. Some Democrats like Congresswoman Shontel Brown from Ohio, don’t like the bill because they say it takes away $30 billion from SNAP over the next decade. They worry this will hurt poor people and farmers, especially those from minority groups. The Democrats on the Agriculture Committee say this is the biggest cut to SNAP in almost 30 years which could affect a lot of people who rely on it.
