May 17th Deadline Approaches for Nearly 12,000 South Carolinians to Claim Over $12 Million in Unclaimed 2020 Tax Refunds

According to the published article of WCBD-TV Charleston, nearly 12,000 people in South Carolina are owed tax refunds from 2020 but they need to claim them soon. The IRS says that the deadline to file for these tax refunds is May 17th. Together, these unclaimed tax refunds add up to over $12 million with the average tax refund being about $840. Across the United States, almost 940,000 people have not claimed their tax refunds totaling nearly $1 billion.

This year, the deadline is later than usual because of the COVID-19 pandemic which pushed it from April to May. IRS spokesperson Rodney Foushee explained that many people might have forgotten to file their taxes in 2020 because of the unusual circumstances. Some of these people include part-time workers, retirees, and college students who might not have needed to file normally.
