Close Collaboration with Aramark: Ensuring Compliance and Expansion of SNAP Benefits Utilization
According to Lexington Herald Leader Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) has taken a big step to help students who struggle with having enough food. They’re the first college in Kentucky to let students use their SNAP benefits at the on-campus store called the POD convenience store. This helps students who might not have enough to eat which is a big issue for one out of every four college students. President David McFaddin says it’s important to make sure students have what they need so they can do well in school. This change means students won’t have to worry about going hungry while they’re studying.
EKU worked closely with Aramark the company that provides food on campus to make sure they followed all the rules for accepting SNAP benefits. Now students can use their benefits to buy important food items like pasta, cereal, milk, and fruit at the POD store. This started this semester and is a big deal for EKU’s efforts to help students who don’t have enough food. They’re also planning to let students use SNAP benefits at other stores on campus. This way students can always find healthy food options no matter where they are on campus. EKU wants to make sure all their students feel supported and have what they need to succeed.
