Illinois Families to Receive $120 per Child for Summer Food Assistance Program
Permanent Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program to Aid Low-Income Families in Illinois
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, this summer, families in Illinois with kids who go to school could get some help with buying food. They’ll get a special card with $120 on it for each child thanks to a program called Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer. Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer is a big help because during the summer when school is out, some families find it hard to get enough food for their kids. Man-Yee Lee who works at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, says this Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer is important because it helps families who are already struggling to afford food.
This Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program has been around in different forms since 2011 but now it’s going to be permanent. It’s for families with school-age children whose income is below a certain level. If you already get help from programs like SNAP or Medicaid you’ll automatically get this benefit on your card. Even families whose kids get free or reduced-cost school meals will get this help, but they need to make sure their address is up to date.

Illinois Summer Food Assistance Program Aims to Ensure Children Stay Healthy and Focused
Furthermore, Illinois is one of many states doing this and it’s supposed to help make sure kids have enough to eat over the summer. It’s important because when kids don’t eat enough it can affect their health and how well they do in school. This Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program will make sure that kids can enjoy their summer without worrying about food, and they’ll be ready to go back to school in the fall. Even though it’s happening quickly the goal is to make sure all kids in Illinois stay healthy and happy during the summer.
