New Jersey Families Struggle with High Childcare Costs

Uncertainty Looms as Senate Delays Vote on Child Tax Credit Expansion

According to Pix 11, Meaghan Donnelly from Maywood, New Jersey, knows firsthand how tough it is to raise kids, especially with the extra high childcare costs during the pandemic. She’s a young mom with two kids and worries about affording food and childcare. Sherry Danna also faces financial challenges relying on a scholarship from the Ridgewood YMCA to send her child to preschool.

U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer talks about the high childcare costs in New Jersey, saying it’s the second most expensive state in the country. He wants a bill to expand child tax credits to become law which could give families more money back on their taxes. But the bill is stuck in the Senate so it’s not clear when it might become law. Families like Donnelly’s and Danna’s hope the bill will pass soon to help them with high childcare costs. They’re waiting to see what happens in the Senate and are optimistic that help could be on the way. As Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer focuses on this issue there’s a chance that families struggling with high childcare costs could get some relief soon.
