Senior Property Tax Discussed at St. Louis County Council: Experts Warn it Will Take Millions of Dollars

The senior property tax was discussed at St. Louis County Council and they took a final vote who favor giving property tax relief to seniors. The vote result was 4-3 to reject the bill. The county revenue experts warned them that it would take millions of dollars away from schools, towns, fire departments, and other public services.

What is the decision of St. Louis County Officials?

The property tax relief to seniors still remains up in the air. According to the published report by Mercedes Mackay, the St. Louis County officials discussed the bill that would give senior citizens relief on property taxes. A majority of them are in favor of the tax relief for senior citizens but some of the council members questioned how exactly this bill would be implemented.

According to Kelsey Landis, senior citizens are desperate for tax relief. Marcha Shuman, a 72-year-old occupational therapist said that many of her senior patients suffered from fixed incomes and increasing property tax. Those in favor of property tax relief for seniors talked about how seniors struggle to pay their property taxes because of higher health care costs and inflation.

Not everyone is in favor of tax relief for senior citizens. The main message to everyone is that they only want to do what is best for the seniors. If Council Bill 114 passes,  the freeze would go into effect next year.
