Analysis of Over 7,500 Cases of Unsafe Sleep Practices Highlights Vulnerability of Babies Under 3 Months Old

According to The Seattle Times, new study looked at why some babies suddenly die, finding that many unsafe sleep practices were involved. Over 7,500 sudden infant death cases of unsafe sleep practices were analyzed from 2011 to 2020. Most of these tragic events happened to babies less than 3 months old, showing how vulnerable newborns are.

Study Links Co-Sleeping and Soft Bedding to Infant Deaths

A study found that many babies who died were sharing a bed with adults and had soft bedding. Health experts warn against co-sleeping because it’s risky. Despite recommendations to keep babies close, sharing a bed increases accidents. Many families aren’t following safety guidelines, with factors like smoking and caregiver impairment adding to risks. Better education and support are needed to prevent these tragic losses.
