Tailored Tax Relief: Credits for Different Life Stages and Financial Situations in California

Many Californians may not be in the highest state income tax bracket 12.3%, which requires an income of around $700,000 in that state. Rather, Californians can choose from a number of tax credits that are designed to accommodate varying income levels and life stages. With a maximum earned income of $30,950 in 2023, the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) helps people with lower incomes. For single people, the maximum credit is $285; for families with three or more children, it is up to $3,529 in value. The Young Child Tax Credit, which offers up to $1,117 in state tax credit if earned income is $30,931 or less, is a supplement to the CalEITC for lower-income families with children under the age of six. Working parents can receive assistance with childcare costs through the California kid and Dependent Care spending Credit, which is based on a percentage of spending and can reach up to $6,000 for two or more children and $3,000 for one kid. Those who rent and make $50,746 or less (for single filers) or $101,492 or less (for married couples) are eligible for relief through the Nonrefundable Renter’s Credit. With a maximum credit of $1,748 for Californians 65 and older whose income is less than $92,719, Senior Head of Household Credit provides assistance to senior citizens, especially those who have recently become bereaved. Divorced parents who manage joint custody can receive up to $573 in Joint Custody Head of Household Credit if they pay for more than half of the child’s expenditures. If a person with a higher income owes taxes in another state as a result of owning real estate or traveling for work, they can prevent paying double taxes by using the Other State Tax Credit. Donations to the California Access Tax Credit (CATC) Fund are encouraged by the College Access Tax Credit, which provides a 50% tax credit for contributions that promote higher education, especially for students enrolled at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
