Mayor Condemns Pearl Ex-Police Officer’s Serious Misconduct
Security Footage Reveals Disturbing Incident during Latino Man’s Arrest
According to nbc, former police officer named Michael Christian Green who used to work in Pearl admitted that he did something very wrong. He forced a person who was in jail to drink urine from the floor. This happened in December and because of this he was fired from his job as a police officer just four days later. The mayor of Pearl Jake Windham said that this action was very bad and serious.
The court documents, unsealed on Wednesday, detailed Green’s abuse of power during the arrest of a Latino man following a disturbance at a Pearl store. Security footage revealed Green’s disturbing command for the detainee to consume his own urine, an act devoid of any law enforcement purpose or justification. Despite the victim’s absence from Thursday’s court proceedings, authorities made efforts to involve him in Green’s hearing. As Green awaits sentencing on May 24, facing the prospect of up to a year in prison and a $10,000 fine, Judge Andrew Harris ordered the surrender of his law enforcement certification, underscoring the severity of his actions and the forfeiture of his authority.
Pearl Police Department Sets Example with Decisive Action and Transparency
Reflecting on the incident, Mayor Windham highlighted the department’s swift response in launching an investigation and Green’s subsequent resignation, contrasting it with past cases of law enforcement misconduct in Mississippi. While brutality charges against officers are rare in the state, this egregious case underscores the need for accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. The Pearl Police Department’s decisive action stands in stark contrast to previous incidents, signaling a commitment to upholding civil rights and maintaining public trust in the face of misconduct.
