Arizona House Republicans Vote to Ban Municipal Guaranteed-Income Programs
Arizona House Passes Bill to Ban Cities from Implementing Guaranteed Basic Income Programs
In Arizona, the House of Representatives made a big decision about money for families. They voted on a new rule, called House Bill 2375, which says cities in Arizona can’t give money to people for no reason. All the Republicans in the House liked this idea, but none of the Democrats did. This rule still needs approval from the state senate before it can become a law.
One Republican, named Rep. Lupe Diaz, thinks giving free money is like socialism which he does not like. He talked about a program in Phoenix that gave $1000 each month to some families for a year. This program helped families who didn’t earn a lot of money. But now, if the new rule becomes a law, cities in Arizona can not do this kind of program anymore.
Debate Over Free Money Programs Spreads Across America’s Cities
Some other cities in America, like Austin and Houston in Texas tried giving free money to families too. Some people think it’s a good idea, but others don’t. One lawmaker in Texas even asked a big lawyer to check if it’s allowed by the rules. So, giving free money to families is a big topic in many places across America.
