Are The Quebec Media Company Will Be A Squatter

The Quebecor has announced they will stop paying rent for the office they use in the provincial capital. It says their rent amounts to $8,448 every month- more than $100,00 annually before tax. This media company is at risk of becoming a squatter for not paying rent. The Quebecor VP Jad Barsoum said the rent ‘goes against the principles of access and is detrimental to democratic life.’

According to the Canadian Association of Journalists Pres. Brent Jolly, Quebec’s legislature charged media outlets amounts to $269.86 per square meter of office space they occupy annually. The Quebecor VP Jad Barsoum said in his recent interview that it’s quite expensive just for office rent. He added the media company is facing a serious crisis in the media sphere amid declining advertising revenue because of the competition from platforms like Facebook and Google. Due to its crisis, it led to job cuts at Quebecor and citizens will no longer have access to information (more globally) and the health of the democracy.

According to the source, the Facebook owner’s recent decision to block access to news content on its platforms in Canada has further strained media companies. In response to the struggles of news companies, the Quebecor is calling the attention of the Quebec’s legislature to support local media by providing free office space because it is unreasonable to charge rental fees for more than $100,000 annually.
