Fresno County’s Bold Move: Launching Guaranteed Income Program to Combat Poverty
Fresno County Takes Bold Step with “Advancing Fresno County Guaranteed Income” Program
In a bid to tackle poverty, Fresno County is launching a new program this summer called “Advancing Fresno County Guaranteed Income.” Despite being turned down by the state-funded program in 2022, Fresno is determined to make a difference. The initiative will provide $500 monthly stipends to 150 residents over 18 in specific neighborhoods like southwest Fresno and Huron. The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC) will oversee the program, collecting applications from March 15 to May 15. Recipients will be chosen through a lottery system, with the first round set to receive stipends in the summer for up to 12 months.

Inclusive Approach: Fresno’s Guaranteed Income Program Welcomes Undocumented Residents
Eligibility is limited to residents in certain ZIP codes with incomes at or below 80% of the median income for their area. Participants must either be pregnant or have children under the age of 5. Notably, undocumented residents are welcome to apply as immigration status will not be a factor and information will not be shared with government officials. This initiative aims to provide support to those in need, including Huron’s large farmworker community and position Fresno in discussions about the future of income support programs.
