According to Yahoo News, after Americans in Oklahoma got worried about where the money from Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit was going investigations found that some of Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit was misused. It wasn’t going to kids’ school fees like it was supposed to. Instead it was being used to pay off other debts like overdue taxes and student loans. The Oklahoma Tax Commission said if someone had these kinds of debts the amount of their tax credit would be reduced. This made Senator Julia Kirt upset because she said there wasn’t enough transparency meaning Americans didn’t know where Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit was going.

Oklahoma’s Parental Choice Tax Credit Misused: Calls for Legislative Changes and Enhanced Oversight to Safeguard Taxpayer Funds
For example if someone owed $4,000 in overdue taxes the Tax Commission would use some of Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit to pay that off before using the rest for school fees. This meant that taxpayers were helping pay off others’ debts without knowing it by Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit. To fix the Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit misuse Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat suggested changing the law to only deal with overdue taxes. But this idea hadn’t been talked about yet in the Senate. Americans wanted more oversight to make sure taxpayer money was being used right. They also wanted answers from the Governor’s office about how Oklahoma’s parental choice tax credit were being used.
