75% of Connecticut Families May Benefit from Permanent Child Tax Credit, Lawmakers Say
According to NECN, the Connecticut Nonprofit Child Tax Credit Coalition along with lawmakers, nonprofits and families has convened at a news conference on Wednesday advocating for a permanent fully refundable child tax credit. The proposed credit would provide families with $600 per child annually and aiming to alleviate child poverty and establish a fairer tax system. Lawmakers emphasized the potential impact stating that the tax credit could benefit 75 percent of families in Connecticut particularly as 39 percent struggle to cover expenses, according to Connecticut United Way.
Amidst rising costs including an 18 percent increase in essential expenses over the last two years due to inflation, families like Jessica Chubbuch’s face financial challenges. Chubbuch is a single parent and expressed how the $600 tax credit could ease financial burdens especially with soaring expenses for groceries and gas. Lawmakers highlighted the broad reaching impact of the proposed tax credit with projections indicating positive effects on Asian, Black and Latino families in Connecticut potentially assisting 65 to 91 percent of these households.
