IRS Reminds Low-Income Taxpayers to File for Recovery Rebate Credit by May 17 – Claim Your Missing Recovery Rebate Credit

According to IRS, as the May 17 deadline approaches the IRS is urging Americans to remember to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for the 2020 tax year especially if they didn’t receive the full amount of their stimulus payments in 2020 or 2021. Regardless of income level individuals can still claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by filing their tax return before the deadline.

US Citizenship, Non-Dependent Status, and Social Security Number – Meet the Eligibility Criteria for Recovery Rebate Credit

To be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit in 2020 and 2021 individuals must typically be U.S. citizens, not claimed as dependents, and possess a Social Security number issued before the tax filing deadline. Claimants must remember to apply for the Recovery Rebate Credit within three years after the tax filing deadline. The IRS is targeting high-income individuals who haven’t filed taxes since 2017 particularly those earning over $400,000 sending letters to over 125,000 non-compliant taxpayers.
