SNAP Approval Delays: Thousands Wait for Food Assistance!

According to Spectrum News 1, A growing number of people in Texas are facing tough times as the state takes an exceptionally long time to approve their requests for food assistance through SNAP. Mary Olivares, who actively participates in food distribution, is well aware of the struggles. She and her retired disabled veteran husband have been waiting for over a year for their SNAP approval. Despite the state saying they’re working on it, no progress has been made. For many, like 68-year-old Chet Baker, who applied for food assistance last year, the extended waiting time is negatively affecting their health. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission acknowledges the severity of the issue, with over 225,000 people patiently waiting for their requests to be addressed. They advise affected individuals to seek assistance by calling 211. Although the state initially claimed it would take only a month to decide on SNAP eligibility, the actual average wait time is 38 days.
