Legal Disputes Over Public Records

According to Union-Bulletin, The Metropolitan Police Committee on Fiscal Affairs has approved settlement payments totaling over half a million dollars to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. These payments stem from legal disputes over public records. In a hearing at police headquarters all five committee members unanimously voted to approve payments of $325,000 and $295,000.

Last year the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in two separate cases that Metro violated Nevada public records law by denying the Review-Journal’s requests for records related to the 2019 Alpine Motel fire and a 2018 police investigation into a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper. These cases were sent back to the District Court level where the Review-Journal and Metro reached a settlement agreement.

Review-Journal’s Chief Legal Officer Stresses Importance of Reimbursement

Ben Lipman, the Review-Journal’s chief legal officer emphasized the importance of reimbursement for attorneys’ fees in public records cases. He noted that such reimbursements are crucial for ensuring transparency in government operations. The Review-Journal had faced repeated denials of its record requests regarding the Alpine Motel fire and the police investigation into the trooper’s conduct highlighting the significance of access to public records in ensuring accountability and transparency within government agencies.
