On February 23, 2024, the West Virginia Senate approved Senate Bill 562 according to the publish article of Smart News. This bill changes the rules for who can get food assistance through the SNAP program. Americans aged 18 to 52 without kids need to work to get this help. The new rule would make the age limit 59 in West Virginia. The person leading this Senate Bill, State Senator Rollan Roberts says it’s a plan to help people gradually stop relying on SNAP. Kelly Allen who works for a group that studies budgets and policies thinks it’s not a good idea. Kelly Allen says it doesn’t help the goal of getting more people into jobs because it focuses on older people who are close to retiring. The Senate voted strongly in favor of the Senate Bill, 32-2.
