Kearney Police Department Makes Arrest in Stolen Vehicle Incident
In the early hours of Thursday morning, the Kearney Police Department received a notification from the city’s license plate reader cameras stating that a vehicle stolen in Colorado was in Kearney. The police officers quickly located the stolen car and the driver, Wikeman Alexander Perez-Perez, at a gas station at 11th Street and Second Avenue.
Perez-Perez, 25 years old and from Chicago, attempted to flee on foot but was caught by KPD officers. After a brief struggle with officers, Perez-Perez was arrested and taken to Buffalo County Jail on multiple charges, including two counts of felony assault on an officer, possession of the stolen property, obstruction of a police officer, resisting arrest, and criminal impersonation.
Further investigation of the stolen vehicle revealed that the car had recently been stolen during an armed home robbery in Denver. Officers found multiple loaded handguns, several stolen and fake identification documents, and other stolen property inside the vehicle.
KPD officers and investigators are working with the Denver Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security to investigate this incident.
“This is a prime example of the importance of our license plate reader cameras and the swift action of our officers,” said Kearney Police Chief Bryan Waugh. “We are grateful that no one was injured during the suspect’s apprehension and the stolen property’s recovery.”
The Kearney Police Department urges residents to report any suspicious activity or behavior to the department immediately.
