Illinois residents are no stranger to crime, and some cities are more dangerous than others. A recent report has revealed the most dangerous cities in Illinois for 2024 based on crime statistics collected over the past year. Here are the top two cities on the list:

Danville:

With a population of 28,480, Danville tops the list as the most violent city in Illinois. The town has a violent crime rate of 1,755 per 100,000 people and a property crime rate of 4,820 per 100,000 people. In 2022, Danville reported four murders, putting the city in the 30th spot on the list of highest murder rates in the state. Despite the high crime rate, the Vermilion County War Museum remains a popular attraction.

Calumet Park:

With a population of 6,711, Calumet Park ranks as Illinois’s second most dangerous city. The town has a violent crime rate of 983 per 100,000 people and a property crime rate of 4,351 per 100,000 people. Calumet Park reported a total of 66 incidents of violent crime in 2022, including four murders. The high crime rate in the area poses a significant challenge for local law enforcement.

Peoria:

Peoria, with a population of 110,551, is Illinois’s third most dangerous city. It has a violent crime rate of 1,188 per 100k people, making it the sixth most dangerous in the state. Property crime is also high at 3,137 per 100k people, ranking it the 13th most dangerous. In 2022, there were 24 murders in Peoria, and residents faced a 1 in 84 chance of being attacked.

Springfield:

Springfield, with a population of 112,549, is another dangerous city in Illinois. It ranks 18th in violent crime, with a rate of 770 per 100k people, and fifth in property crime, with 4,244 per 100k people. In 2022, there were seven murders in Springfield, and the city had 867 attacks and murders.

Hazel Crest:

Hazel Crest, with a population of 12,849, ranks as Illinois’s fifth most dangerous place to live. Its violent crime rate is 731 per 100k people, making it the 19th most dangerous in the state. Property crime is also high at 3,424 per 100k people, ranking it the ninth most dangerous. In 2022, there were three murders in Hazel Crest.

Carbondale:

Carbondale, with a population of 21,612, was not in the top twenty most dangerous places in Illinois last year, but it has now moved up to become the 16th most dangerous city. Its violent crime rate is 786 per 100k people, and property crime is 3,146 per 100k people. In 2022, there were four murders in Carbondale, and the city experienced 680 property crimes.

Alton:

Alton, with a population of 25,212, is the seventh most dangerous place to call home in Illinois. Its overall crime rate is about 70% higher than the national average, and it has the 13th-highest violent crime rate in the state. In 2022, there was one murder in Alton, and the city had a property crime rate of 3,121 per 100k people.

Chicago Heights:

Chicago Heights, In a recent report, statistics have shown that Chicago Heights is one of the more dangerous places to live in Illinois. With a population of 26,393, residents face a substantial threat from both violent and property crimes. According to the report, the city has a violent crime rate of 1,902 per 100,000 people, making it the second most dangerous place in the state. The property crime rate is 2,667 per 100,000 people, ranking it 30th in the state.

Rockford:

Rockford, with a population of 146,710, has the fourth-highest violent crime rate in Illinois. The city reported a violent crime rate of 1,430/100k and a property crime rate of 2,635/100k. In 2020, there were 16 reported murders in the city, making it a cause of concern for residents.

Chicago:

Chicago, the most populous city in Illinois with a population of 2,652,124, has the 32nd most dangerous violent crime rate in the state. However, with a property crime rate of 3,132/100k and 604 reported murders in 2020, the city has garnered a reputation as one of the most dangerous cities in the state.
