Two Chicago Police officers were injured when a burglary suspect hit them with a getaway car on Chicago’s Near North Side in Streeterville. The driver of the vehicle is still at large. The officers pulled over the car because it matched the description of a vehicle used in a burglary a little over a mile away in the Gold Coast neighborhood. The incident began in the 1500 block of North State Parkway in the Gold Coast when officers interrupted burglary suspects breaking the window of an ABC work truck while employees were inside a nearby building.
Video footage shows a couple of officers and the burglarized vehicle, an ABC work truck with the front passenger window smashed in. Police followed the suspects to the DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Chicago Avenue intersection for more than a mile. During the arrest of the driver, a passenger slid over to the driver’s seat and took off, hitting the officers and his accomplice with the car.
The officers were treated and released after being hospitalized for their injuries. The suspect who was arrested was also hospitalized. The getaway car, a stolen black sedan, was found on 51st Street on the South Side. Police are investigating the incident and processing the vehicle for evidence concerning the burglary case. The suspects now face felony charges of aggravated battery to a police officer. Ald—Brian Hopkins (2nd) praised the officers for their work and expressed concern for their safety, noting that the incident could have been much worse.
