Property Tax Relief and Child Tax Credit Initiatives

State Representatives Dan Ugaste and Tim Ozinga propose House Bill 4866 to lower Illinois’ property taxes, which frequently rank high. Their concept, initially proposed by former State Representative Mark Batinick, would cut property taxes by increasing state financing for municipal pensions.

Batinick noted that pension expenditures have stayed steady as a percentage of the state budget, allowing for additional property tax relief. Batinick thinks reallocating a portion of the state budget to municipal pensions might cut property taxes by 50% in some locations.

In another measure, State Senator Omar Aquino proposed a state-based child tax credit to help Illinois families. This idea would provide low-income families a $300 credit, which Aquino said might help them satisfy necessities and boost local businesses.

Senate Bill 3329 and House Bill 4917 are intended to assist almost half of the state’s youth. Another bill by State Senator Mike Simmons would grant a $700 child tax credit.

These initiatives indicate a coordinated effort to ease Illinois residents’ financial responsibilities when legislators gather for the spring session. As conversations continue, the goal is to reduce property tax burdens and help state families.
