NYC’s Innovative Pilot: Pre-paid Debit Cards for Migrant Families Offer Flexibility and Savings

The pilot program for migrant families will provide pre-paid debit cards to 500 families with children for use at bodegas, supermarkets, grocery stores, and convenience stores. Pre-paid cards instead of non-perishable food cartons are cheaper, saving the city $7.2 million yearly.

The “more cost-effective technology pilot program” gives pilot programs for migrant families applicants pre-paid instant response cards, according to City Hall. These cards let recipients buy food and infant essentials. Compared to hotel-provided non-perishable food boxes, this initiative is more flexible and respectable for migrant families.

Pre-paid debit cards are meant to provide asylum seekers more freedom to choose what they need. The program promotes financial inclusion and supports persons who have trouble using regular banks.
