The disturbing background of Romeo Nance, the 23-year-old who is suspected of carrying out the Joliet Mass Shooting, which left eight people dead last month, is made clear by newly released police records and video. Nance was involved in a road rage shooting in January of 2019 and a knifepoint robbery in 2019, according to the records that were made public upon public request.

Nance was charged for robbing two individuals at knifepoint outside a tobacco store, where he pressed a knife against the chest of one victim. In the road rage incident, he honked aggressively, threw a water bottle, and fired shots at a woman’s car, leaving 14 shell casings and damaging a nearby home.
Police had been called to Nance’s homes at least 14 times since April 2022, indicating ongoing issues. The records also reveal a previous encounter where Nance, confronted by officers, was cuffed during a struggle while a woman, likely his mother, pleaded for restraint.
In the video, Nance is seen being handcuffed as he calmly steps out of a car. He later runs towards the street, prompting police to tackle him. During the arrest, a loaded semi-automatic pistol and ammunition were found in his backpack.

The tragedy unfolded on January 21, with Nance committing the Joliet Mass Shooting, taking the lives of six family members and a random victim before ending his own life the next day in Texas. The victims included his mother, sisters, brother, aunt, and uncle. Another man was wounded, and an eighth victim, Toyosi Bakare, was found shot in the head.
The newly surfaced details raise disturbing questions about Nance’s troubled past, his encounters with law enforcement, and the events leading up to the tragic Joliet Mass Shooting.
