In January, the University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions team launched a two-year trial initiative funded by $1.6 million from the federal American Rescue Plan.

The Michigan Stimulus Update on the next payment is scheduled for February 15 and sent out on the 15th of each month until 2025. The program helps financially struggling residents strengthen the community.

Ann Arbor residents 18 or older with incomes below 225% of the federal poverty line were eligible. Monthly Stimulus Boosts Financial Flexibility Until 2025

Poverty Solutions deputy director Kristin Seefeldt emphasized the program’s celebration of community contributions to enduring financial problems. Unlike limited assistance programs, guaranteed income beneficiaries can allocate monies according to their requirements, fostering dignity and meaningful decision-making. Seefeldt, a University of Michigan assistant professor of social work and public policy, stressed that beneficiaries can use the funds for bills, savings, or personal spending.

The Michigan Stimulus Update on Guaranteed Income to Grow Ann Arbor supports universal basic income (UBI) conversations on new ways to reduce economic inequities and help low-income people. The initiative differentiates by helping small-business owners and entrepreneurs financially, acknowledging their vital role in community development.

The initiative, which runs until 2025, is a realistic experiment in discovering how guaranteed income affects individuals and the community while promoting financial flexibility and empowerment.
