The state of California and the Internal Revenue Service have already released the schedule about when they will start accepting 2023 income tax returns.
California and Federal Tax Refund
The California Franchise Tax Board began accepting 2023 income tax returns on January 2, 2024, while the Internal Revenue Service will start on January 29. This tax season, it is expected that more Californians will file their income taxes after the IRS expanded the AGI.
In a published article in Yahoo News, taxpayers need to file their state and tax returns by April 15. However, the state of California grants an automatic extension to Oct. 15. Taxpayers are also reminded to pay their owed taxes to the state and IRS no matter when they file their income tax returns.

State Controller and FTB Chair Malia M. Cohen Released a Statement
According to a published article in the Sacramento Bee, State Controller and FTB Chair Malia M. Cohen said through a news release, “The FTB recommends taxpayers gather their tax records ahead of time to help facilitate a smoother tax filing process,” said State Controller and FTB Chair Malia M. Cohen in a news release.”
Furthermore, the official added, “I encourage Californians to take advantage of the FTB’s online services, including filing their taxes electronically and choosing direct deposit to a bank account for a quicker refund.”
