The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS) has warned of a new scam targeting SNAP EBT card holders. Scammers put gadgets on card readers to swipe customer data and deplete accounts.
Omaha Resident Falls Victim to SNAP EBT Card Skimming Scam at Baker’s Grocery
Baker’s Grocery refused Omaha resident Tanyounak Carter’s SNAP EBT card, revealing theft. Carter’s card was repeatedly refused despite having enough funds, and she received a receipt showing a $183 balance. She had been skimmed.
Skimming involves installing devices on card readers to steal user data and drain accounts. Carter’s experience affected other Omaha-area clients, according to NDHHS Accounting and Finance Manager Cari Crosby.
Carter, a single mother of eight on maternity leave, lamented the loss of benefits and called for action against such schemes.

Nebraska Warns of EBT Card Skimming Scam: Tips for Safety and Recovery
To combat fraud, DHHS advised changing SNAP EBT card PINs often and not using the same PIN for several cards. To monitor account balances and identify unauthorized charges, they recommended downloading the EBTedge app. Carter warned of delays in collecting the stolen money and urged people to avoid similar schemes. Scammers caught making out-of-state transactions show the sophistication and scope of such crimes.
DHHS advised victims to call AccessNebraska if they suspect skimming. Carter stressed the need to raise awareness to prevent other families from suffering. The case highlights the vulnerability of government assistance recipients and the necessity for improved security to protect their entitlements.
