As the 2024 tax filing season approaches, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released a number of tools and services to help people file their 2023 forms. The IRS website’s “Get Ready” page provides helpful hints, and some of the tools with brief descriptions meant to help taxpayers manage the tax filing process properly are included below.
Earned Income Tax Credit Assistant
One of the featured tools is the Interactive Tax Assistant, designed to assist taxpayers in understanding various aspects of tax law. It provides guidance on filing statuses, dependents, credits, and deductions, offering clarity on common questions related to tax regulations.
For low to moderate-earning families with qualifying children, the Earned Income Tax Credit Assistant is available. This tool helps taxpayers determine their eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and calculates the amount of the credit they may be entitled to.
The “Where’s My Refund” tool allows taxpayers to track the status of their refund after filing. With a quick and efficient system, the IRS aims to provide refund status information in less than 21 calendar days. Whether filing electronically or through a paper return, this tool ensures transparency in the refund process.

IRS Individual Online Account
Any taxpayer with a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer ID Number can set up an IRS Individual Online Account. This account provides access to critical information such as balances owed, payment history, transcripts, and the ability to view or create payment plans. A new feature introduced in 2024 allows users to cancel scheduled payments to the IRS.
The Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number designed to safeguard taxpayer information. By registering online, taxpayers can request an Identity Protection PIN, preventing unauthorized access to their personal details during the filing process.
The IRS offers multiple filing options, including IRS Free File, accessible to almost anyone through the IRS Free File webpage. Additionally, taxpayers can locate authorized tax professionals to e-file their returns, providing flexibility in choosing the filing method that suits their preferences. Taxpayers are reminded that the deadline to file their 2023 tax returns is Monday, April 15, 2024. As the IRS continues to enhance online resources, these tools aim to streamline the tax filing process and provide valuable assistance to individuals navigating the complexities of income tax regulations.
