Lucky coin collector finds rare 1966 Australian 50-cent coin in pocket change.
Hidden Treasures in Coin Collecting
The collector was shocked with around 50-cent coins and posted on Reddit. This silver piece was limited to 36.4 million and circulated 14 million times. It had Queen Elizabeth II on the front and the Australian Coat of Arms with a kangaroo and emu on the reverse.
The 80% silver/20% copper coin is worth $15 at today’s silver pricing. The Royal Australian Mint dropped silver fifty-cent pieces owing to excessive costs and confusion with the twenty-cent piece. Reddit collectors were ecstatic, with one stating he got similar coins as erroneous change since they resembled 20-cent coins.
Coin collectors want the 1787 Fugio cent, claimed to have been invented by Benjamin Franklin, and the Australian discoveries. The copper coin’s reverse says “We Are One.” and contains 13 overlapping circles for the original 13 states.

High Prices and Collector Joy
Only 398,577 coins were made, thus preservation is important. Uncirculated Fugio coins sold for $3,500 and $6,450 on eBay in January 2022.
Cash is precious, as another collector who got a rare coin in change learned. Rare coins like the $22,800 “flowing hair” coin are still available.
