Expansion of Summer EBT Assistance

Nevada’s permanent Summer EBT program extends support to families, following the universal provision of free school meals throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, funded by $28 million in American Rescue Plan funds. This program mirrors benefits akin to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), targeting food assistance during the summer months.

Twenty-two states, including California, Arizona, and Utah, alongside four U.S. territories and two Tribal Nations, are participating in this crucial initiative, the first federal nutrition program passed by Congress in decades. Funded entirely by the federal government, states are required to cover half of the administrative costs, with Nevada anticipating no hurdles in securing funding for execution.

Anticipating support for over 29 million children nationwide, the Summer EBT program is positioned to significantly diminish food insecurity among vulnerable households. It’s essential to emphasize that while offering invaluable assistance, Summer EBT supplements existing federal programs without replacing them, ensuring essential food support during summer months.
